2001-2004. Art direction by Erik Spiekermann. Released by FontFont.
Bau is based on Grotesk, a typeface released by the Schelter & Giesecke typefoundry in Liepzig, Germany at the end of the 19th century and used prominently by the designers at the Bauhaus. Each weight was drawn separately, to give the family the irregularity of the original, and the Super is new. We originally wanted to call it FF Haus, following Erik Spikermann's rule that all typeface names should be 4 letters long, but an existing trademark got in our way.
The italics were commissioned by Men's Fitness for a 2004 redesign. Font Bureau did the initial work, getting them done within a crushing deadline, but I ended up rethinking them before the final release.
Regular, Medium, Bold and Super, with italics
